Digging a stump out by hand can eat a whole weekend, and some stumps won't budge no matter how long you dig. A stump grinder makes quick work of it, but it isn't something most people keep in the garage. Rental grinders are heavy and take practice to handle near fences and flowerbeds.
Even once the stump's gone, there's the question of what comes next. Fresh grindings make poor ground for grass, and plenty of homeowners only find that out after their seed fails.
We bring the grinder and handle the cleanup. We'll also tell you what the spot needs before grass will grow there.
A clean, level spot where the stump used to be. Pick the finish that suits you.
Option 1
We grind the stump below ground, clear away most of the grindings and rake the spot smooth. You can mow right over it and plant grass there later.
Option 2
We grind deeper, haul off all the grindings and put down topsoil, seed and straw before we leave. The spot is on its way back to lawn the same day.
Still have a tree standing? Our tree service covers trimming, pruning, storm cleanup and small tree removal. We can grind the stump once it's down.
Fresh grindings leave the soil acidic, and the spot settles as the leftover wood breaks down. So after a standard grind, we leave the spot slightly crowned and recommend giving it a season or two before adding topsoil and seed. A few wood chips in the soil are normal.
When you're ready, our lawn repair service can take care of it. If you'd rather skip the wait, choose the immediate finish. For a larger area, sod installation is another option.
Before we come out
Please call 811 before your visit so utility lines in your yard get marked. The call is free. 811 won't find private lines like irrigation, an invisible pet fence or outdoor lighting, so if any run near the stump, let us know before we start. We're careful, but we can't take responsibility for private lines we don't know about.
With a standard grind, there's nothing to do but mow over it until you're ready to plant. With the immediate finish, water the seeded spot like any lawn repair area: about an hour, 4 days a week, between 7 and 10 AM or 6 and 9 PM.
If something about our work isn't right, call or text us and we'll make it right.
We grind stumps in Nashville and across Middle Tennessee, including Belle Meade, Berry Hill, Brentwood, Greenbrier, Ashland City and Smithville. Call or text 615-398-4307 to check if we cover your street.
Our standard grind goes 6 to 8 inches below grade, meaning below the level of the ground around it. The immediate-finish option grinds deeper so we can put topsoil and seed down the same visit.
With a standard grind, we remove most of the grindings and rake the spot smooth, so you'll still see some chips mixed into the soil. With the immediate finish, we haul all of them away.
Not with a standard grind. The fresh grind area is acidic and settles, so we recommend waiting 1 to 2 seasons before adding topsoil and seed. If you want grass now, choose the immediate finish.
Yes. Please call 811 before your visit so utility lines get marked. Private lines like irrigation, pet fences, outdoor lighting and drains aren't marked by 811, so let us know where those are.
Our tree service team handles trimming, pruning, storm cleanup and small tree removal. For very large trees, we'll point you to a partner we trust.
Grinding takes the stump down below the surface without digging out the whole root system. For most yards, that's all you need to mow over the spot or plant grass there.
